Who doesn’t love some fresh Calamari, Sardines, a perfect Paella or the whole thing. Chiringuitos, the beachfront restaurants lined up all along the coast, are an integral part of both the cuisine and the culture along the whole Costa del Sol. At the latest around noon, the smell of fire smoke fills the air as the chiringuitos light up wood in small boats turned into barbecues right on the beach. Freshly caught fish are put on a stick with just a few pinches of salt added and put next to the fire. Done!
Typical dishes that I recommend to absolutely try to get a taste of the typical Spanish cuisine are:
- Sardinas al espeto (traditional grilled sardines)
- Gambas al pil pil (gambas in sizzling hot olive oil with garlic and hot peppers served with a piece of bread to dip in the sauce)
- Almejas a la marinera (clams in a tasty sauce)
- Berenjenas con miel de caña (fried aubergines topped with sugar cane honey)
- Pescados fritos: boquerones fritos, puntillitas y calamares fritos (fresh fried anchovies, baby squid and squid rings with lemon)
- Boquerones en vinagre (marinated fresh anchovies)
Visit Chiringuito “El Madero” or “Bikini Beach” when in Estepona, or go to the Chiringuito “Pepe’s beach” which is only a 20 min walk from Casa la Concha.
